What is THC-O?
THC-O is the acetate ester form of THC, sometimes called THC-acetate ester or O-acetyl-A9-THC. It is commonly known among experts as THC-O-acetate (or ATHC or THC-Oa), but almost everyone uses it as THC-O for short. Sometimes people leave out the hyphen and call it THCO or THC O. However you choose to spell it, it's pronounced “THC-oh” — that's the letter O, not the zero.
Like delta 10 THC and other hemp-derived cannabinoids on the market, THC-O is almost chemically identical to delta 9 THC, the intoxicating compound that dominates the marijuana plant.
And the effects are very similar to delta 9, but because it binds more strongly to the body's cannabinoid receptors than other forms of THC, THC-O is more intoxicating than delta 8, delta 10, or HHC—and more potent than delta 9 THC. (more on that below).
THC-O can be used in all the usual styles of cannabis: vapors, oils, edibles and flowers. THC-O vape carts and disposables are sold either with unflavored distillate or with added terpenes for flavor.
THC-O is also mixed with edible oils such as MCT to make tinctures for oral use. THC-O foods are also available, including gummies and chocolates. Finally, there is the “THC-O flower”, which is simply a cannabis flower infused with THC-O.
What are the effects of THC-O?
As with other cannabis-derived THC variants, the big question is does THC-O get you high? The answer is clearly yes. In fact, THC-O is said to be 3-4 times more potent than the delta 9 THC found in marijuana.
Measuring the effects of THC-O versus delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, or HHC is of course subjective. But by most accounts, THC-O gets you higher than delta 8—and a much more intense experience than any other form of THC.
Not only is THC-O stronger than other forms of THC, but the psychoactive effects are completely different. Many users describe THC-O as causing an almost psychedelic high with borderline hallucinogenic effects. Experts and drug dealers advise new users to take it slow when trying this powerful cannabinoid.
There's another reason to take it in stride: the effects of THC-O are often delayed. It's a so-called “prodrug,” meaning that the THC-O you swallow or inhale is not pre-activated by heat like most THC (a process called decarboxylation).
However, the effects of THC-O are not felt until the body has fully processed the food-like THC.
So if you eat THC-O gummies or power up a THC-O cart, you won't feel any effects for 25-65 minutes. Because it is so strong, it is important to use a small amount first, then wait and see how you react before consuming more.
