The Top Soils for Cannabis Growth

If you are a marijuana cultivator, you will have an idea of the top soils that are best to be used for optimum cannabis growth. There are certain specific ways to plant and grow cannabis both indoors and outdoors. If your cannabis growth is indoors, then there are two recommended methods, which is from soil or using a hydroponic system. Prior to spending your hard-earned money on any of these methods, it is best to know more about them first. In other words, it is important to have some knowledge about the basics of the soil necessary for optimal cannabis growth. Here are a few essentials to growing cannabis in soil that is friendly towards marijuana. The first things you should consider are water retention, texture and drainage capability. Let's look more closely at this.

The Requirements

It is not hard to be caught trying to think what kind of nutrients to find in the soil. While this is important, the most essential aspect of the soil is the drainage ability, water retention and texture as we have already established. For the marijuana plant to really thrive and experience healthy growth, it has to get a decent mixture of oxygen and water at its roots. You cannot give it too much water either and neither can the roots get too much oxygen, but enough to not injure the plant or cause it to dry out too fast. The soil must have a light texture to experience the best cannabis growth. The light texture helps the plant to retain water, but yet not too much water. We will soon look at which soils are good and which are bad.

Good Marijuana Soil

How do you know if you are using good soil for healthy cannabis growth? The soil has to look rich and dark. It also needs to have a loose texture. The soil also has to drain well and hold the water without turning to muddy water. Yes, the soil can be wet, but not filled with mud or dirt. Here are some examples of the ingredients you would find in good marijuana soil:

  • Sandy Loam
  • Perlite
  • Azomite
  • Bone Meal
  • Fish Meal
  • Coco Coir
  • Pumice
  • Vermiculite
  • Crab Meal
  • Earthworm Castings
  • Kelp

No soil mix has all of these ingredients. However, these are soil mixes you can start with, if you want to have a good harvest and the best cannabis growth. Let's look a few of them.

Perlite

Perlite is commonly used to amend the soil and it is recommended to be used for any soil mix that has no Perlite in it. It has an airy white appearance and is very light. It feels much like popcorn. To our mix, add the Perlite, but don't use too much or you won't get the kind of water retention that is necessary. In addition, avoid using too much nutrients when you use Perlite. This is due to the fact that the additional Perlite could result in the nutrients leaching out quicker from the soil.

Vermiculite

Vermiculite is another ingredient that will help with optimum cannabis growth since it lightens soil that is heavy and it also helps to improve the water retention. Some cannabis growers tend to interchangeably use both vermiculite and perlite. One reason is because the Vermiculite tends to hold water better than the perlite does. It is more helpful to use them both in moderation.

Coco Coir

Made using coconut husks, Coco Coir is sometimes loose or sold as a brick, but the brick format has to be rehydrated prior to being used. Some soil mixes that are good for cannabis growth will be sold with more Coco Coir ingredients in addition to amendments. This is considered the ideal choice to growing cannabis successfully.
