You just need to have the right ingredients and the right technique for you to create an amazing salve that will provide maximum relief to your furry fried. This article will give you just that.

We will start by answering a few questions that you might have on CBD topical salves for dogs before diving into our amazing homemade CBD topical recipe.

What Is A CDB Topical Salve?

A CBD topical salve is a CBD product that has been formulated specifically for use on the skin. A salve, unlike other CBD topicals, has a solid consistency. It is made by combining oils and waxes.

Are CBD Topicals Effective for Dogs?

Dogs, as well as other pets, have an endocannabinoid system that is similar to that of humans. Dogs have numerous endocannabinoid receptors on their skin.

When CBD topicals are applied to the skin of dogs (beneath the fur), the CBD is taken up through the layers of the skin and reaches the endocannabinoid receptors. CBD interacts indirectly with endocannabinoid receptors on the skin to provide therapeutic benefits.

CBD topicals may not cause systemic effects because the CBD does not get to the bloodstream. However, CBD applied topically is effective in combating superficial pain, itchiness, inflammation, or other similar conditions. Furthermore, CBD topicals exert their effects faster because the CBD is quickly absorbed through the skin.

Benefits of CBD Topical Salves For Dogs

  • Helps to relieve soreness and joint aches
  • Facilitates wound healing
  • Combats itchiness on the skin
  • Relieves allergic reactions on the skin such as contact dermatitis
  • Provides nourishment to the skin
  • Relieves inflammation from insect bites

How To Use CBD Topical Salve for Dogs

CBD topical salves are applied directly to the skin of the dog. Pour a generous amount of the salve onto your palm and massage on the skin of the dog in circular motion until most of the oil is absorbed. You can apply the CBD topical salve on the affected areas such as joints or inflamed areas.

Do CBD Topicals Have Any Side Effects?

A study that was conducted by the World Health Organization in 2018 showed that CBD is safe for human and animal use. The report went further to state that when side effects occur they are usually as a result of CBD’s interaction with other drugs.

CBD on its own is very safe to use on the skin. It does not cause any allergic reaction nor does it cause negative effects.

CBD topical salves may be infused with extra ingredients that may not be skin-friendly. Homemade CBD topical salves allow you to select ingredients that are absolutely safe for the skin.

Should You Add Carrier Oil To Your CBD Topical?

CBD comes in high concentrations. Therefore it is important to mix it in carrier oil to dilute it and enhance its absorption into the skin. Carrier oils may also boost the therapeutic benefits of CBD without altering its effectiveness.

When choosing a carrier oil for your CBD topical salve, consider one that is safe to the skin. Hemp seed oil can be used though it delicate and goes rancid pretty fast. You can add vitamin E to extend the shelf life of hempseed oil. Fractionated coconut oil is a good carrier oil to use that is readily available. Olive oil also works perfectly but it’s pricey.

Why Do You Add Wax To CBD Salve?

You have to get it right with the wax when making a CBD topical salve for dogs. The wax provides a base for the salve, without it you will not achieve the right consistency. Lotions and creams are made with water, but since salves have a firmer consistency they require wax.

The best wax to use for CBD topical is beeswax. Beeswax is neutral and easily available. If you are a vegan you can substitute candelilla wax for the beeswax.

Should You Add Essential Oils To Your CBD Topical Salves for Dogs?

I do not recommend adding essential oils to CBD topical salves for dogs. Reason being that some CBD oils are not safe on the skin unless diluted. Full-spectrum CBD offers numerous therapeutic benefits that may be sufficient to combat a number of ailments. But if you really need to add essential oil, make sure that it is safe on the skin of your dog.

Peppermint essential oil offers a cooling effect on the skin and this may help to relieve sore joints and muscles. Copaiba essential oil is rich in terpenes and may help to boost the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of CBD.

With that settled, here is what you have all been waiting for.
