  5. Top Marijuana Documentaries To Watch

There are a few top marijuana documentaries that are recommended for viewers, especially those interested in marijuana. Of course, the people who are against marijuana may tell you differently. Reefer Madness is one of the marijuana documentaries made in the late 30s, but still prevalent, even today. This film is about several high school students that smoke weed and then commit terrible acts such as rape, manslaughter, and hit and runs.

The Reefer Madness was initially not an actual cannabis documentary, but more of a propaganda that was financed to try and save kids who are too young to know the limits of smoking weed. At its rebirth in the 70s, Reefer Madness became a satirical piece, more so to show the ridiculousness of the original film. This helped the pro-cannabis movement to gain more traction.

Weed

In 2013, “Weed” was one of the marijuana documentaries that were directed by physician, Sanjay Gupta from CNN. This is an actual documentary that changed the minds of many people as it relates to weed and Dr. Gupta was one of them. Once Dr. Gupta began to conduct research about marijuana and its benefits, he then changed his attitude, thinking and belief. In the “Weed” documentary, viewers will see the ways and reasons that weed were prohibited in the United States during the 30s. Believe it or not, it was not always for illegal reasons.

Prior to the 1930s, marijuana was used to treat various medical conditions. It was Harry Anslinger who gathered the anti-marijuana groups to the perception of society. In the documentary, Dr. Gupta speaks about the war on drugs campaign and how it helps to jail nonviolent offenders for longer than the crime deserves. Dr. Gupta also talks about the science and politics behind marijuana.

Super High Me

It was in 2008 that “Super High Me” came about. This is one of the marijuana documentaries that show the declining health of a patient who was binging on food from McDonald's and living a sedentary lifestyle. During the documentary, weed is used to replace the food from McDonald's. The patient smokes the weed for 30 days as an experiment to answer the questions of legalization and to look at the marijuana culture.

Clearing the Smoke

Clearing the Smoke is another one of the marijuana documentaries created in 2011. This film explains and explores the science of marijuana. It is quite in-depth into looking at health benefits related to cannabis consumption. The film explores illnesses such as cancer, glaucoma, chronic pain, epilepsy, and nausea; among other things. Patients and doctors are interviewed throughout the documentary.

The Culture High

The Culture High is a documentary sequel created in 2015. This is one of the marijuana documentaries that won an award for Best Documentary in 2015. The documentary takes a look at the prohibition of weed and the debate over legalization. Different people are interviewed throughout the film including Snoop Dogg, law professors, undercover agents and law scholars. Those interviewed offer testimony and opinions on the reasons why they are for cannabis or against it.

The Documentary

The Documentary was created in 2013 as one of the marijuana documentaries that closely examine the hypocrisy of marijuana restrictions. The film looks at the history of marijuana from the 30s until now. The film explores cannabis propaganda and studies the political agendas that have put the fear of marijuana into society. You will see this movie as what it is – a blatant falsehood that so many people believed.

Marijuana documentaries are quite informative and allow the viewer to learn more about the plant, its history, its value, and other eye opening things.
